The Freethinking Minority

Joel: Constantly talking isn't necessarily communicating.

-Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind

I'm back! I took a break from posts while I was home in San Antonio for the holidays. I didn't take my PC with me, and God forbid my parents ever finding a link to my blog in the internet history. Ha, I bet they totally read it weekly but just don't tell me. Somebody elses's parents found this recently and "weren't impressed" by me. Sorry, didn't know that was what I was supposed to be doing...impressing people. Fuck that.

Damn, a lot sure can happen in a month. I guess I didn't really do much over the break. I did do a lot of sleeping in, relaxing, seeing movies, and hanging with my buds. One night we (Alex and I) were able to get most of the old band nerds back together for a night filled with nostalgia. It's insane seeing how much everybody has changed, and how much everybody hasn't changed. Alex and I seem to live completely different lives, but when we get together it's like we're 16 again. (See pictures below)

I'm currently eating a huge bag of heavily salted shelled peanuts. They are quite delicious, but I suck the salt off the shells and my tongue feels like it's been rubbed with sandpaper. I'm smart.

School started up again yesterday. I was dreading the drive back up to Denton but, incredibly, I made it in 4 1/2 hours which is something to brag about. Getting adjusted to a completely new routine in less than 24 hours can do damage on one's emotions and, alas, I'm feeling the stress of classes already. I called my mom today very frustrated. I think babbled, cursed, and complained for five whole minutes. I probably just stress her out by doing that so maybe I'll resort to my blog more often to vent.

Hmmm...what else? Oh! Some great movies I saw/rented over the break that you MUST see! I gotta say that I wasn't too aroused by the idea of seeing King Kong because I usually don't get off on big FX movies like that. But I jumped on the band wagon anyway and really enjoyed it, surprisingly. It was a lot of fun...and a little depressing. I rented a few goodies as well: Mysterious Skin (fantastic...but very disturbing...NC-17) and Broken Flowers were both great. (Bobby would argue with me on the latter) I guess the only ones I saw in theaters were Kong, Family Stone (surprisingly very good...loved it), The Squid and the Whale, and Brokeback Mountain. My two favorites were The Squid and the Whale and Brokeback Mountain. If you get a chance to see them, do it!

The Squid and the Whale tells the story of two young boys and how they deal with their parents' divorce in the 1980s. It's really funny, but on the other hand very shocking, sad, and disturbingly fucked up. The father (Jeff Daniels) is a pretentious, arrogant writer with a complete lack of self-awareness whose career may be becoming shadowed by his ex-wife's. (Laura Linney) The mother is a seemingly more passive, but equally horny woman who is blamed for the divorce. Each boy sides with their "favorite" parent and soon adapt to their behaviors. It's based on the director's own experiences as a child, and has sort of a confessional vibe about it because of it. Seriously...rent this when it comes out. It's fantastic.

Brokeback Mountain was...hmm. I can't really explain it without sounding redundant. I'm sure everybody knows the basic story by now. I mean, you can't turn on your television without hearing something about it. (which is a good thing) Basically if you haven't seen it yet, then you're really missing out on one of the best films of '05...or ever. It took a while for me actually understand the movie as I had hoped to, but when it did I was blown away. It's a movie that lingers with you after you've seen it. Love isn't to be understood but to be honored and powerfully felt and Ang Lee does a great job in persuading us of this. It's a movie that gives us an honest look at the most profound connection you can have with another person. It defies categorisation and gives us an opportunity to re-write the way we look at ourselves. See this movie.

Wow that last sunset picture is amazing! I sure miss that, what with me being surrounded by buildings and barbed wire (I'm not in prison yet, just in the nation's capitol).
