Near-Life Experience

Perry Van Shrike: You're an idiot. You know that? You know if you looked in the dictionary next to the word "idiot" you know what you'll find?
Harry Lockhart: A picture of me?
Perry Van Shrike: No! The definition of the word "idiot". Which you are.

-Kiss Kiss Bang Bang

Good afternooon! I apologize before hand if this post turns out to be a ramble-fest. I just woke up from from an afternoon nap to the sound of my cell phone vibrating violently on my desk. It was my dad asking to see how the weather was up here in North Texas. And to answer his question: fucking cold...The temp right now is 21 degrees but I hear the windchill is much cooler. I love cold weather when it's summer and I love warm weather when it's winter so I always have trouble finding my happy medium during the seasons. It is, however, the first time I've seen snow in a while and that's pretty exciting. I left astronomy early today and got to experience my lonely six minute walk back to my car witha light blanket of snow hitting my face...so cool.

Last weekend was great because I actually accomplished my to-do list and saw four excellent movies. First was Good Night, and Good Luck starring George Clooney, Robert Downey Jr, and Patricia Clarkson about the McCarthy trials in the 50s and even though I didn't know too much about Ed Murrow of CBS trying to bring down McCarthy, it was still really interesting and a good movie. After that I drove down the street to see Kiss Kiss Bang Bang starring Val Kilmer and Robert Downy Jr. (again). Such a funny and original movie but I found it hard to stay with the plot. You probably already read my rant about My Date With Drew, and if you haven't yet...see last post.

And then there was Happy Endings.Oh. my. god. Screw My Date With Drew up its butt because Happy Endings was fucking terrific. I'm trying to figure out how to say that I loved it and give you a little background on it and reason to check it out without sounding over zealous or pretentious. Uuum...fuck it. I LOVED THIS MOVIE! It's such a complex story that keeps you on your toes (which I love). It revolves around a plot similar to 21 grams, Crash, or even the television show LOST in which the characters and subplots brush paths with each other. It's a dark comedy centered on this woman named Mamie (played by Lisa Kudrow with surprising depth). She's being blackmailed into participating in a young eccentric documentary filmmakers project with her foreign lover in exchange for information on the son she (it turns out) didn't have aborted when she was younger. To make matters worse, her gay step-brother is the father. He's ina relationship with a man named Gil who donated his semen to a lesbian couple who (it turns out...again) lied and said his sperm didn't work. Meanwhile, Jason Ritter (son of John) plays an introverted, and young in-the-closet gay kid who is seduced by his new female band member (Maggie Gyllenhaal) in order to get to his rich father.....**Gasps for air!**

Ugh, it's so great! As the movie progresses and the false facades of the characters fall away, they're made to recognize the consequences of their actions. The thing I love most about the movie is that all the actors shred every scrap of dignity they may have had prior to the movie all for the sake of making the characters believable. The cast is phenomenal. Also, the first minute of the film is worth the entire two hours. Go rent this movie!

The pressure of finals next week is breathing down my neck, so that should be my cue to leave and study a bit. Enjoy your week, and laters for now!

Ah! Snow! I basically wanted to hump your eyeballs in your crazy terrorist picture. Just kidding, but only about the terrorist part.

I signed up for Blockbuster movies by mail so I can try to keep up w/ all the good movies that you talk about. My date with drew should be arriving shortly... followed by all of the rest that you mentioned.

That's it.. Oh yeah, and by the way... I had to download the new AIM and I can't work it for shit..so good luck chatting w/ me from now on. Grrr.
